old cat - can't retract claws

One of my cats (getting on a bit now) can no longer retract claws.

I know it happens to some cats when they get old, but is there anything a vet could do about it?

If not I don't really want to take her as she is rather neurotic and would find the whole experience extremely stressful.

Anyone know?

TIA

I don't know but bump for you as about to drop off ACs.

Thanks

Would you consider getting the vet out? (I know cost is always an issue but as it isn't an emergency he might 'fit' you in?)

My mum did this when her beloved cat was very poorly - but we couldn't afford it (or imagine that we could)

Would be too expensive sadly enough.

Not sure it would help as she doesn't like strangers (she doesn't like most things ).

Good idea though

Poor pussy - hope she feels better/pulls her claws in soon

I would recommend seeing your vet if you can becuase it may be a sign that something is wrong see this home.ivillage.com/pets/symsolve/0,,lhpd,00.html

Thanks for that - looks like a trip to the vets might be necessary.

Oh dear, better get out the catnip (She loves the stuff and it chills her out).

Do it now. The worry about it is worse than it being done.

Any news?

ArmadilloDaMan · 19/11/2007 12:47

sorry, been a bit hectic and been putting it off.

Am taking her tomorrow, her eye started weeping today, which am thinking will mean she has another allergy (ho hum). Poor girly.

HAve to take a poorly ds with me as well - this is going to be fun

went to vet (ds =nightmare )

She had her claws clipped - apparently they are retracting but are really long so were still catching. She was not happy.

Got ointment for eye (Wasn't too fond of that either).

But generally is in very good health for her age which is great.

She's sulking now. Gave her some left over lamb so she's forgiven me a bit.
