Dog taking metacam

My dog has been prescribed metacam for an 'unknown' pain... she is having tests for cushings disease on Wednesday as blood results lead us to believe her liver is suffering. She was prescribed paracetamol but did nothing for her pain and she got worse so we went back to the vets and they prescribed metacam which has made her a lot happier however it has given her very bad diarrhoea (vet did warn me this would happen).

She had it injected yesterday and today was her first liquid dose. Today's stools have been worse, I'll hear her tummy turn and then she'll just have to go there and then so I've been scrubbing the carpets today!!

Is there anything I can give her to calm the upset tummy? It's definitely working for the pain however she hasn't had ANY water all evening and normally she drinks a LOT! (Hence one of the reasons for cushings test). I am worried she's dehydrated but I don't want to take her off the meds as she was in a lot of pain screaming etc before she took this.

Does anyone have any advice? If she's still not drinking in the morning I will call the vet obviously but didn't know if there's anything I can give her to stop her upset stomach?

Thanks!

I get a probiotic from the vet if my dog has an upset tummy, I am not sure if it is a contraindication with Metacam though, it is the quickest way to sort it out and costs less than £20.

Have you been giving it to her when she has food on her tummy?

Are you giving the metacam with food? Metacam can be quite harsh on the digestive system and should never be given on an empty stomach.

I would give your vet a ring tomorrow before before you give her her next dose.

Yes she takes with her food once a day. Very worried about her lack of water intake not so much the tummy as he warned me. Though I would rather her not have it!

I'm going to call the vets tomorrow and see if there's a more gentle alternative that can be given. Just don't want her to dehydrate!

Ask your vet if you can use pro-Kolin at the same time. I used the cat version for my cat when she was a kitten and pooing in the litter tray 10 times a day. We had tried loads of things but it was the only one that helped. It's apparently quite tasty and she happily licked it off a spoon then begged for more.

My dog can't tolerate metacam so the vet prescribes tramadol instead. Worth asking?

yep - same as GeidiPrimes - metacam was really bad for my dog. I think labradors are particularly susceptible to the negative side effects - it caused her some liver issues and a horrible lump on her nose. We got tramadol for her and it worked for the pain without the side effects.

I also put a splash of milk in her water if she'd not drinking enough - seems to do the trick.
