Guinea Pigs what do i need to know ?

I am thinking of getting dd1 some for her birthday this month but i have never had one before.
Do they smell if kept indoors?

I know they can be very sensitive to the cold but if i change my mind and don't want them in the house can they go outside in a playhouse?would it be warm enough?

I read that they need vit c ,where would i get this from?

Thanks

Some old towels for when you are handling them, unless you have guinea pig size nappies - they tend to be slightly incontinent.

We just got a new little baby gp the other day to keep our older one company. Is so gorgeous. They are fab pets

LucyElasticband · 09/11/2007 23:39

oh i want one
try and persuade dcs,
have been tryign to persuade them for a long time

gibberish · 09/11/2007 23:40

I'll post a pic of our new baby tomorrow Lucy - dcs won't be able to resist!

The cavies have arrived
Gorgeous gorgeous babies.

We weren't going to give them to dd1 until her birthday on the 26th but we couldn't resist.
We did buy from a petshop in the end but they are a decent petstore.

There were 5 to choose from and i knew as soon as i saw them which ones i loved (despite them being for the dd's really)
One is a white and red Abbisynthiam (sp?) and the other is charcoal with a fleck of gold down the bridge of her nose and with swirls of copper on her one side.
They are 9 weeks old(well so they said in the shop)they are lovely but were very nervous intitially .Bit by bit though they have got braver and have been happily eating and running through their tubes.

I am in love with them, keep calling them my babies, lol.

Thanks all for your advice.

Now we need names

Aaaaw was just going to ask you what you had named them! Ours are Cookie and Toots. Muffin is no more

Those names were chosen by the girls I hasten to add...

Beauregard · 10/11/2007 23:19

Ah poor Muffin

We have started a list between us .dd1 is learning to write and wrote Tit on the list but i can't say i fancy that, lol, although Tit and Bit could work....

rofl or Tit and Git. How sweet

Beauregard · 11/11/2007 20:21

dd1 has named them,i was overruled on Tit and Bit,they are Peppa and Pickle!

Peppa is fine but Pickle seems very cagey and i'm sure she has nipped Peppa a couple of times

ours are Jeffrey and Philip and I love them like children almost! They live with my aged rabbit Charlie and love him to bits, they spend all day grooming him and lolling around on him.

Sooooo cute!!!

chankins · 11/11/2007 20:28

They are great pets for kids, we've got three girls, who get on great - have had boys before who fight - Kept them when I was a kid too, and never had them in the house though, they were always warm enough if the hutch was covered and in the shed.
IMO make better pets than rabbits which are really hard to handle ! Also, guinea pigs are extremely funny. They really are.

binkleandflip · 11/11/2007 20:35

they are almost remotely controlled by the sound of the fridge opening. You can hear ours squeaking from the end of the garden right through the conservatory and to the back of the kitchen lol
