How often does your dog poo ?!

Our (nearly 2 yr old) collie tends to have a poo about 4 or 5 or even 6 times a day. He only has one meal in the evening, so it just seems so excessive! He hardly has any treats (2 or 3 biscuits when we leave him but that is not every day) and has dry 'complete' dog food. We give him the recommended amount, we even weighed it to make sure. Our previous dog just poo-ed twice a day.
Is he normal??!

my Border Collie goes 3 times a day, and has a dried dog good that I add water to. I feed her twice a day, breakfast and tea...

4-6 times a day seems an incredible amount.

My springer does one a day, and eats 2 meals of dry food and one bedtime Bonio (plus any dead animals he finds on walks ).

I'd get a vet to check him out - they'll probably want a poo sample though!

My older dog was in the vets 3 times last week due to having a serious bout of diarrhoea - I had to do a poo sample - not nice but had to be done! Came back ok though.

My younger dog had the same bug - turned out it was a dog diarrhoea epidemic in the area.

A lot depends on what you feed your dog to know whether or not pooing 5-6 times a day is normal or something to worry about. My younger dog did poo 5-6 times a day but she was a puppy at the time and ate 3 meals a day. She's now 7 months old and eating home cooked food and poos once a day.

I've had many discussions with my vet over the past few weeks concerning diet and dogs - both my dogs have been ill, on and off, for last 3 weeks and last week was a bad week with the eldest one. I had to starve them both for 36hrs to clear their stomachs out. Once back onto bland food they were fine and I've just kept feeding them bland food - fish/chicken etc. The additives put in dog food can cause a dog to pass motions on a regular basis through the day. With a home cooked diet they digest it more and its absorbed more into the body. Dog food goes straight through although it obviously has a lot of goodness, minerals and vitamins in order to sustain a dog.

How amazing, the things our dogs eat!!!
We could write a book!
(How about that for a stocking filler??!)

My vet also suggested all dogs should be starved for 24hrs once a week - this way they clear their stomachs out of everything and it helps with digesting food.

If you look on the sides of dog food packets/tins most will say 'meat derivatives' which means they have a very low meat content which means they make the difference up with additives etc.

I would much prefer to cook for my dogs so I know what they're eating plus one poo a day per dog is much easier to deal with.

MALO am glad you sorted your dogs, but goodness couldn't imagine having to starve the dog for 24 hrs, he fusses and frets the moment we have finished our meal! But what you said makes sense, we will reconsider what we feed the little darling.

springer twice a day unless he is unwell.

MALO · 03/11/2007 22:56

Yes starving them for 36hrs was extremely hard work especially when I was cooking tea for the kids - the whining and begging at my feet was pretty hard (dogs - not kids!) but I just ignored them. I had no option though because otherwise they'd continue to be ill. Every time I let them out for wee's I had to go out with them just to make sure they didn't go rummaging in the hedges. Nightmare. I don't know what was worse - kids or dogs!

silversparkler · 03/11/2007 23:04

Oops sorry for the double posting, still considering writing that book!

With what I've had to pay in vets bills this last month I could do with writing a book!

bethoo · 05/11/2007 11:45

you are so lucky. my two are constantly pooing! easily up to 8 times each a day! how depressing! though now that they are gettign older it is not as often. when they were younger everytime they went out they were going once or twice!

MALO · 05/11/2007 12:07

Do you ever get the feeling that all you do is pick up poo??!! And why is it my kids shoes always find it?
