Retriever puppy

we are getting out first dog, a retriever puppy in a month. I’m researching beds for him. Can anyone give me some recommendations please of the best sort? I have seen the doughnut beds and wondered if they might be quite cosy, also I’m assuming I don’t get the size you would do for when they are fully grown as the bed will swamp them? Is that correct please? Also assuming it will probably get chewed through and will need replacing in the not too distant future. Any ideas are welcomed, thank you.

Will you be crate training him? We had a mat kind of thing which she only ever chewed when it wasn’t in the crate, we’ve now got a big square bed quite well cushioned, we have had to say ‘no’ a couple of times but she doesn’t tend to chew anymore.

Thank you, yes, we will be crate training him. Do you mean the vet bed material for the crate? I have been looking at that.

One that can’t be chewed! We couldn’t find one at the time - 20 years ago now so might be better options. One of our two labs chewed even the advertised “non-chewable beds”. No amount of chewable toys stopped him! They slept in the hard floor until he grew out of it aged about 2. He was the most gorgeous pup though!! We then had very washable beds as they loved water and mud.

Our lab chewed vet bed too!

Sounds like whatever we get will be chewed! I have read the beds made of tougher material aren’t anywhere near as comfortable. Thank you for your comments!

No advice on the bed but prepare for anything and everything to be retrieved,

We had a golden retriever who would carry around match boxes, underwear, eggs (if she could get them) toys, shoes... the eggs she would carry out of the kitchen and drop them on the Livingroom floor to crack them as a snack.

That sounds quite amusing when you aren’t the person who owns the dog!

They also like a comfort blanket or toy that they carry round all the time. Better if it's not your pants.

Yes I've just remembered, she had a special cushion she would take to the front door to greet people.

Ours is in a crate and we have 3 spare pieces of vet bed to go inside. All of which he has had since a puppy.

He chewed one piece (the first piece he had, in one corner) but the other two are completely in tact.

Its great stuff easy to wash and really 2 pieces would have been enough he is 9 now. So very durable.

Our retriever puppy has chewed all his beds and prefers to lay on a blanket on the floor of the crate just now!
