Help me decide which pet to get!

Have promised dd2 we are going to get a pet. It can't be a cat or a dog, so I'm thinking something like guinea pigs or rabbits, or possibly gerbils or hamsters. Could they be kept in a garage or do they need to live outdoors? (Foxes roam around our garden)

Have absolutely no clue about any of the above mentioned animals or what's required of me. Any advice gratefully received!

Get a pair of rats (same sex) they are lovely, clean, intelligent and affectionate pets.

Hamsters HATE children.
Guinea pigs are sweet and lovely but SO easy to finish off
rabbits can be stroppy
a rabbit and a guinea pig together can be fatal for the poor guinea pig
mice are nice but smelly
gerbils are lovely
fish are pretty but dull

can all be inside but guinea pigs or rabbits really need an outside run to spend some time in - but you can be with them while they're in it.

choose rats choose rats choose rats

Our guinea pigs have outlasted our rabbit.
And they are such funny, friendly creatures.
Have never scratched or bitten anyone, not ever.
Whereas the rabbit was part vampire, I'm sure of it.

I love 'recycle a rodent'.
My father had rats as pets when he was young, and thought they were wonderful.
