Cats fur separating

Soo I have a kitten she's around 5 months old. She's healthy with a nice thick coat, I recently noticed her coat is getting thicker and seem to be separating into rows. I am also brushing her, as well as her grooming herself. Any ideas as to what this is or is it normal. (I do have her booked into the vets this Friday! Photo attached!

I think it’s just that the under layer is so fluffy so making the fur separate. My previous cat was very fluffy with a slightly longer coat and his fur did that. Vet never made any comment on his coat except to say how lovely and soft he was. My girl now has slightly shorter fur and is smooth and sleek. Just totally different coats for different breeds.

Yes, that's normal
