He's going to the vets later today but he's coughing as if he's got something in his throat or trying to be sick but nothing is coming out except salivia.
He has been like this since yesterday and is coughing like a old man.
MIL dog has had kennel cough lately but he hasnt been near him, any idea's??

shame, how old is he?

Kennel cough is the most likely - Is still possible even if the dogs did not meet. You may have carried it home on your clothes, or possibly he just has it from being out and about where another dog has been recently with kennel cough.

Other things to consider - something stuck in his throat, other reasons for throat inflammation/chest infections etc.

I'm sure your vet will be able to give you more info today.

Sounds like kennel cough.
One of my dogs pick it up everytime it is going round. funnily enough my other dog doesn't catch it!!!! (shes prob got a really good metabolism)
The last time she got KC my vet told me to give her a little bit of cildrens calpol , I was a bit unsure, but it seems to do the trick for her

Hope all goes well at the vet.

Meant immune system, not metabolism

FLIER · 11/10/2007 09:57

it could be anything, our old family dog started coughing when she was getting heart problems, which was why I was asking how old yours is, hope he's ok.

DoctorFrankenSquonk · 11/10/2007 10:00

could it be a furball?

fifisworld · 11/10/2007 10:41

FLIER - He's only 6 months

He's back from the vets, he has kennel cough.
He's been given some medicine and tablets so hopefully that will sort him out.

Oh I'm so pleased that he's ok. I just read the OP and I was worried that it was the condition called bloat. My old dog had this once or twice and it can kill within hours. Symptoms are dry-retching/coughing, and a swollen, painful abdomen.

Flier · 11/10/2007 17:37

glad he's ok, I'm sure it won't take long till he's better.

beautifulgirls · 11/10/2007 19:26

Children Benylin yes, Calpol NO! Calpol has paracetamol in it which for the most part is not advisable to give to dogs.

fifisworld · 11/10/2007 20:27

Ive just gave him his second lot of medicine, its Codine Linctus.
Ive got a bottle of t his in the cupborad already, i didnt think that they'd give dogs the same as what we have. These vets know how to make there money dont they
As long as it makes him better though
