Hello Mumsnet
I just wanted to get peopleS opinion on something.
I don’t have a dog but I had a thought the other day.
What if people allowed their dogs to have one litter and gave the litter away to neighbours / members of the community the know. (Like they used to do)
The dogs would grow up with their siblings and family around them and it might put a stop to the ridiculous price people pay for puppies and the horrific puppy farming industry?
I’m sure there is a big reason why people don’t do this but I’m stumped to know what it is. Was watching a documentary on the puppy farming the other day and it’s scarred me. What are people’s thoughts?

Because it costs quite a lot to have a litter. It can go wrong and you have a large vet bill. What about the DNA tests that are recommend to avoid genetic problems (cross breeding doesn't negate these)? What about the other tests like hip scoring etc?

So essentially you want people to put their dogs life at risk, pay out money for testing if they care about genetic and other health conditions. And then give away all the puppies.

That's before all the work to look after the puppies before they go to the new owners.

Can't see many people signing up to that.
