Literally losing sleep over new kitten - he’s not even here yet!

We are due to bring our new kitten home very soon and I’m having a complete, oh my god - what’ve we done, panic!

I was never this anxious about bringing my actual human babies home so I don’t know what the issue is but it’s like the last few days all the negative points of cat ownership have hit me.

What if it destroys my new sofa? What if it urinates on all the beds?

Is this normal or have I made a huge mistake?

Sounds like you shouldn’t be bringing “it” home...

We got 2 kittens 3 years ago. Our sofas are fine and they've never peed on the beds. Have scratching posts and a cat tree and enough to occupy them and they won't need to make a nuisance of themself.

@dementedpixie ideally we would’ve liked two but he was the only one left out of his litter! We’ve ordered scratching posts and I’ve been looking at the citrus spray too, I will keep my fingers crossed that he will not be a furniture destroyer by nature!

Totally normal. I got my two home and had the Omg, what have I done thoughts. But it was fine and they are the best things ever. Even if they've cost £21k I. Vets bills.

Hey I’m just about to bring a new kitty home too, It’s very exciting you have nothing to worry about.
we already have one as well.
He peed on the floor one or twice trying to make it to the litter tray but That’s it same as a child they have accidents.
Ours never ruined any furniture he lays around on it all day.
He is an absolute joy to be around.
I was nervous when I bought my first cat home totally normal to feel that way. Honestly most of the time they just lazy around the house this is my cat currently

Get a couple of Feliway plugins for different parts of the house. The scratch pads made of cardboard go down better here than the posts (we have both) Make sure kitten has some quiet places like boxes with towels in to hide away. But yes they may scratch things, ours have gone for carpets over the years and we’ve never found a way to stop them. If you can stand the thought of anything being scratched at all, don’t get a cat, at least a bit is inevitable

My new kitten, now just over a year old has only peed in a large pot plant. He might have done it more than once because the plant is now dead. He's never peed on the floor, clothes or beds. He has a sly scratch of the sofa but only when I'm sitting on it and I stop him straight away, his scratching post is next to it. He's a lovely, funny cat and I'm so glad I got him after many years of being catless.

He’s coming home this week! I am giddy with excitement! We’ve bought a lovely little den for him to hide in when he likes and climbing thingymajig with some extra hidey holes in too. We’ve not got scratch posts yet but have looked at a few different types.

The only thing he really needs now is a name, but we’re waiting to have him home and get to know him a bit first. Still slightly apprehensive but the “oh shit” feeling is definitely less than it was. Thank you for all your tips, keep them coming!

Sorry to be negative but I don’t think you can just dismiss your worries. My cat completely ignored all scratching posts preferring my furniture instead. Feliways made no difference at all. Basically don’t have a pet if you need it to behave a certain way.
