what first pet should i get for my toddler?

i want to get a pet for my 20 month old but don't know what is best to get..
i live on a first floor flat and out most of the day, so would really welcome some advice on an easy to keep animal...

Goldfish.

No pint to a hamster or anything like that so yes, Goldfish.

agree goldfish - anything else is going to be quite high maintenance.

oops - sorry, wasn't meaning to be horrible...I just think that 20 month-olds are way too young for pets if you haven't already got one. Either the pet gets badly manhandled, or spends it's time cowering from over-eager toddler, toddler loses interst after 10 mins, you end up looing after it, even a goldfish would ahve to be kept completely out of reach or it will get a handful of poo in it's tank and the tank will get knocked on the floor...

I wouldn't get a pet for a 20 month old.

If you're going to get a pet, get it for you.

A stuffed toy. I'm sorry but at that age, either the pet or the child are a risk to each other.
