Hi all, we recently rehomed a french bulldog and I was wondering what others do to keep them cool in this hot weather? Obviously we haven’t been walking him while it’s hot but want to make him as comfy as possible.

Also, we’ve moved him off Frolic to Harrington’s but he doesn’t seem to want to eat a lot but is drinking as usual. He’s had a check up at the vet and was all fine.

I have two pugs so very similar as in the squashed little faces they also really struggle to breathe. I went to the vets years ago when I got my first one too because I was worrying as he always seemed to be so hot and I read that flat face dogs are common for over hearing the vet said that dogs don't no when they are getting too hot they are a bit stupid in that sense they will lay directly in the sun which mine would if I let them they are black too so don't take them long to get hot he said to just try keep them out of the direct sunlight and only walk in the early mornings and late evenings which I was doing anyway.
The ways I try keep them cool is I have a fan wherever I'm sat (as they are constantly sat with me).
I've also got a pool in the garden for them so if we are in the garden and they've been laying in the sun I'll pop them in that to keep them cool well I have to put one in it the other one happily is in and out of it all day anyway, I read online that damping there ears help cool them down so maybe if getting a pool isn't an option try a wet cold flannel just damping them down with it when they look like there getting too hot, I've also got a brolly in the garden so try put them under that or in shaded areas.
I make them 'ice dog treats' which you can do lots of different ways if you google it you're find loads of recipes but I use bananas and fat free yoghurt blended together. Also I'm always trying to make sure there water bowl is full with cold water so I pop a few ice cubes in there now which has been working out better.
I've got a cooling mat which I find is very good and they love on hot hot days you put it in the fridge to keep extra cool mine are forever sleeping on it also you can get cooling dog coats which I've heard really good reviews about. Personally my dogs are quite lazy so I try get up first thing to take them for a morning cool walk to tire them out so there not running around playing to much in the day in the sun.

My dogs are on James wellbeloved food, one is super fussy and I've tried changing a few times just if I ran out but he never eats them.

Hope any of this helps it's worrying when it's really hot having a dog isn't it all the best x
