DS has had a hamster bought for him (we pre approved)
It’s a dwarf hamster but after googling I’ve realised there are different types.
Can anyone identify from these pics and any general advice please Smile

russian dwarf hamsters do ok in pairs, I had 2 at one point. Syrian hamsters are better as a single hamster

She sounds lovely Smile. Ours is very jumpy and trembles a lot poor girl. She was quite active for the first couple of evenings but just hides a lot now. Hopefully she's just a sensitive little soul!

dobbyssoc · 17/06/2020 20:05

She's beautiful!
As above you need a muchhhh bigger cage than that even for a dwarf breed! You would need to upgrade it ASAP I'm afraid rather than waiting. Websites such as zooplus do amazing cages for a small price!

Thank you, glad I came on now as we would’ve left her in that one for a little while, bit annoying that PAH have recommended this cage Angry

Its definitely a Syrian. I wondered if maybe a Russian and a Syrian had interbred but apparently that's not possible. Roborovskis are very very fast and ball shaped. They're also nasty nippers. Chinese hamsters are very long and sleek looking, gentle and lovely to handle and they have longer tails than all the others.

RoLaren · 17/06/2020 20:13

Can't believe no-one has suggested Siberian!

ChewChewIsMySpiritAnimal · 17/06/2020 20:14

You could take the cage back and say you've done some research and it's not fit for purpose. See if they will refund you. None of the animal enclosures they sell are fit for purpose really. All far too small. Makes me angry that they still sell fishbowls.

ChewChewIsMySpiritAnimal · 17/06/2020 20:15

Siberian is the same as Russian dwarf.

FelicityBeedle · 17/06/2020 20:15

Considering that’s a child’s hand, I still think it’s a dwarf with unusual colouring. How old is your son? Just for better guessing.
You can return the cage to PaH one you replace it as it’s not fit for purpose, normally they accept cage returns fine (even used) but there’s a chance you may need to be quite insistent.

This is the cheapest cage that fits minimum requirements, but you need to buy some mesh if it is a dwarf

We've got 2 Campbell's Russian dwarf hamsters and that one looks a lot like ours to me.

lljkk · 17/06/2020 20:18

To me the body shape looks wrong for Russian or Syrian hamster.
I thought most Syrians had at least an orange tinge to them, slightly, somewhere.

Gorgeous!

Siberian is also Fawlty Towers as well as a real hamster breed Grin

Perhaps it is just the angle of the photos but that looks bigger than a dwarf to me - I had two Russian dwarf hamsters and they were a similar colour but smaller (and definitely did not get on, had to split them up). Wouldn't fill the palm of my hand size-wise.

So I would say syrian hamster as well. Cute, whatever the breed is!
