Cat visitor- to feed or not to feed?

Looking for some advice.

A lovely little black cat ha started turning up at our backdoor. We’ve even found it in various parts of the house several times.

I would normally ignore but it has no collar and looks extremely skinny and not well looked after.

We’ve lived here for five years and I know most of the local moggies but have never seen this one before.

It is extremely nervous and won’t be petted and leaps out of its skin at any loud noises.

I wouldn’t normally feed random cats as I know they’re all experts at giving the impression they’ve never been fed.

Leave we’ll alone or not?

I'd get it to a very to check for a chip. It could be lost. Then go from there

bumblebeefairy · 01/06/2020 19:43

I agree. Take to a vet. See if it has a chip and is genuinely lost. If not, keep feeding (and consider yourself chosen!)

HappyHammy · 01/06/2020 19:43

I would feed it something bland. Not milk. Can you take a photo and post it on your local lost pets site. Would it let you put it in a box so you can see if its microchipped. Post us a pic too😁

bumblebeefairy · 01/06/2020 19:44

P. S. Please keep feeding it til you can catch it to take it!

BelleSausage · 01/06/2020 19:51

Thanks. We were thinking about trying to catch it to take to the vets. Here’s a picture of his majesty. Maybe her majesty. Who knows!

I’ve had cats before and am pretty sure it has fleas as well.

It’s not keen on being touched so catching might be quite the task.

Can you look on pets reunited and any local sites and see if its lost. I would put a box outside with a blanket in it for shelter..can you borrow a pet carrier or make one to take it to a vet. The little face looks lovely.

HappyHammy · 01/06/2020 19:58

Is that its tongue hanging out. It looks oriental.

BelleSausage · 01/06/2020 20:12

It’s quite an odd shape- really long body and back legs much longer than front. Like a scaled down panther!

Will update if I find out anything more about it. Will start asking neighbours when I see them.

DD is fascinated. She’s been begging us for a cat for ages. Maybe Father Christmas sent this one a bit late 😂

I would say feed the cat if it looks neglected, and see if you can gain his confidence. I did give bits of ham etc to the cat that visited us. This went on for 18 months and we eventually found the owner who didnt want him.
He has now officially lived with us for 15 months and we all adore him.

BovaryX · 01/06/2020 20:19

Hi,
Beautiful cat. He looks exactly like mine. If you think he's hungry, I would feed him. If he is nervous of people, maybe he has been badly treated. Ours was abandoned and we have had him eight years, but he is still nervous of strangers. I wouldn't try to grab him, feed him and see how it goes. Hopefully he will gradually become more confident in you.

BelleSausage · 01/06/2020 20:24

Ok, having looked at some pictures online he’s definitely an oriental short hair. Has all the main features. So he’s not skinny. He’s perfectly normal.

I’ve been had by a cat con artist! I would imagine someone nearby is wondering why their very expensive pedigree cat is off its food- because it’s been conning pieces of chicken out of me.

We had an oriental girl. They are beautiful just like all cats. Smile

BelleSausage · 01/06/2020 20:37

He is gorgeous. And I think he knows it.

I have always wanted a black cat with green eyes! If he keep coming back I’ll start asking around to see who he belongs to.

Yes don't feed him if he's in good condition. My cat convinced the neighbours he was a poor starving stray. They started to feed him and then my other cats started visiting too 🤣 I have quite a few!

custodiandiscount · 01/06/2020 21:29

don't feed him if he looks cared for, our old cat was a CFand would convince you and all the neighbours that she was dying of starvation when she'd just scoffed a vast brekky an hour earlier.

he is a very handsome boy though and I might sneak him the odd tiny bit of ham

BelleSausage · 02/06/2020 09:48

We’re going to stop feeding him and try putting a paper collar with our number on it to try to find his owner.

Morning! I have resurrected this zombie thread for an update on our cat con-artist.

DH went out to get our milk delivery from the step on Monday to find that CCat had managed to knock the bottle over, get the foil off the top and was happily drink all our milk!

We had stopped feeding it. I think this is her revenge. She did it again this morning!

Am now definitely reviving my Facebook account so I can find the owner.
