Are bio-orbs really worth the money or is something cheaper just as good?

My dp has decided to get our ds a fish tank .. we havent made up our mind as yet as to whether to go for tropical or cold water... I love the look of the bio-orbs but are they really worth the money or is something less expensive a better way to go? Any advice please!
