How much did you spend on vet bills?

Hi all, we have relocated to the UK with our French bulldog who is now 6. She has never been ill in her life. I've found out that insurance for frenchies here is over the moon, around £2000 a year for a lifetime cover (up to £4000 a year) and half for 12 months short term illness.I am thinking if it would make sense to have £4000 in savings for her and get accidents only/liability insurance.

If you have a frenchie or a pug how much have you spent on vet bills? Has any of you had savings rather than insurance and has it worked for you? Any thoughts would be highly appreciated...

Slightly different, but I have Persian's. They have run up bills of £20,000 between them. My premium is currently £75 a month for top level cover. I'd never have been able to find £5000 in an emergency when One I'd them got pancreatitis.

@Toddlerteaplease thank you! This does help taking decision further. I find if insurance costs £2000 a year and covers up to £4000 a year it would make sense to save..

How old were your pups when you started having medical problems? I can see that in your case insurance makes sense, it's heartbreaking when they are ill. Hope they both are well now.

They are cats. But have the same issues as frenchies. They were 5. But had been vast tested before rescue. Which didn't help.

3 dogs (currently):

Dog 1 is 14 years old and vet bills have been around £2k over his life.

Dog 2 is also 14 and bills have been £15k over her life. £12k of that was in one year.

Dog 3 is 3 years old and over the last year has spent £3.5k - and rising!

Have you looked at Bought by Many to see if it's any cheaper?

Thank you all! I decided to get an insurance after all but I went for a pet insurance that covers up to £4000 year (limited) for short term conditions. This one is £35 a month rather than lifetime which is £180 a month for a French bulldog. I guess a year of cover will give us enough time to save if more will be required. Fx she stays healthy as is! So far we spend nothing on her apart of the vaccinations.
