Introducing new kitten with older cat

Hi.
So we have just gotten an 8 week old kitten a week ago.
We have done the scent exchange and also had the kitten in the carrier asleep on the couch while the older 8 year old cat was free to roam.
Most times he just walks past the carrier...other times he will stop and hiss.
When we put the kitty in my daughters room, the older boy will smell the empty carrier...and sometimes will hiss, sometimes just smell.
We now have the kitten (whose a female) in a playpen in the corner of the family room.
My older boy (when he thinks we’re not looking) will go past the pen, stop and do a hiss... BUT... over the last 24 hours, he will actually come out and lay in the family room...about 3 metres from the pen. He still does the walk past and hiss...but he will actually allow himself to fall asleep on his side in the same room.
My partner picked up the kitty and sat about half metre from the older cat. He did a bit of a hiss and with his other hand, my partner went to pat the older cat, while he did nothing to the kitten, he did swipe my partner. My partner feels that that may have been a mistake on his part.....

My kitten is currently asleep in her pen, and my older boy is currently asleep on the floor about five metres away.

So, is it going to plan.....and are we doing the right thing?

Any further advice will be helpful...xx

P.S: while he has hissed and done little growls, he hasn’t swiped at her, or fluffed his body up to seem “larger”....xx

We followed that mad cat guy from the tv about it. Jackson something, has loads and loads of YouTube videos.

We introduced a 5 year old cat into a hour with 3 cats, following the advice from him.

Basically it’s all about smells and time, it took us a few weeks before we even let them see each other, it’s worked brilliantly.

Hows the older cat with food? Give him treats when hes near kitten without hissing

My older boy cat has never really liked our younger girl cat. Although he doesn't hurt her (and he tries to kill any other cat he meets outside!). He hissed at her quite a lot until we got a feliway friends plug in - it's really helped a lot. Might be worth a try.

They generally don't like it tbh. Cats are solitary animals and prefer to be alone - especially true as adults and you're trying to introduce a kitten.

Just keep doing what you're doing and make sure you have enough litter trays because existing cats sometimes develop behavioural problems when they feel threatened by a newcomer and you don't want him to start weeing where he shouldn't

Everything you have done takes time. Ensure there are enough resources for the 2 cats. The rules are 1 litter tray per cat plus 1 extra, always feed completely separate and also have water sources separate from food. Then allow multiple rest points, some higher up for the older cat. This will reduce the competition for resources. They will eventually tolerate each other. Loads of good advice on the icatcare websites icatcare.org/advice/introducing-a-kitten-to-your-cat/
