Talk to me about adopting a cat

I’ve never had a cat before but I’m now on a waiting list to rehome one. I’ve been contacted about a lovely looking 5 month old male cat who I’m going to visit at the weekend. I have 2 DC age 3 and 6 and I’ve been told the kitten is fine to be rehomed with children.

Are there any sensible questions I should ask the rehoming centre to make sure that I get the right sort of cat for my family?

If you've never owned a cat before I'd start with an older one. Kittens are adorable but hard work. If you do get a kitten it's preferable to get two as well. There's some wonderful older cats waiting for homes :)

I'd ask about its background, where it's come from etc.

I've just adopted an 18 month old cat and he had come from a home where there were children with learning difficulties who had been mauling him a bit, hence he was a bit scared of any new person, in case they were the same. He's fine now he's realised im not going to be picking him up for no reason and he loves his cuddles

Did you visit him? Cats are the best!

I asked every question possible. Was lied to. She was a professional, we had friends in common. I know why she lied though.... The cat is a feckin MONSTER!
We were terrified of her. Absolutely not good with people. She lives with my mum now after 6 years of trying everything.
Its luck of the draw. Cats are weird creatures, no consistency in their personality

Our cat is 5 months old. She's been absolutely fine with our 7 and 9 year old. Obviously we had her from being 2 months though.

Thanks everyone. We ended up visiting 2 at the weekend and we came home with a slightly older one. She’s 12 months old and was a bit friendlier towards the children. She’s fitting in beautifully!
