Thinking of getting a kitten

Hi, I have always grown up with cats but not had my own at mine since moving out of my parents about 13 years ago!! Have wanted a cat for a long time and my partner and i are now thinking of getting a kitten. He has never had a pet so has taken some convincing but now seems more keen!
I went to visit some kittens last week at a cat rescue home, the staff were lovely there and took plenty of time answering all my questions. They explained things in LOTS of detail and have made me a little nervous lol!! It will be the first time the responsibility has come down to me! They explained its really important the kitten has a base room at first, isnt left alone for more to 4-6 hours etc..,.
Has anyone got any tips for a first time kitten owner?!
How to best help a kitten get settled in?
How long it takes to settle in?
Best routines for the kitten at nightime etc?!

Thank you in advance!

The advice about confining the kitten to one room at first is spot on.

My advice would be to give the kitten plenty of 'space' (in the sense of not being all over it) when it first arrives, to sniff round and explore. You may find it hides away somewhere at first (so make sure any risky nooks and crannies, such as chimneys, aren't accessible). Let the kitten come to you - get some interactive toys (such as dangle toys) to encourage it to play with you. The Rescue should tell you whether the kitten is OK with being handled.

How long to settle in is a bit like how long is a piece of string! It will depend on the kitten, but 2 - 4 weeks in my experience.

@C1239 If you don't get many responses in 'pets' - ask MNHQ to move the thread to the dedicated cat topic, The Litter Tray.

I found my kitten really easy, I've had her 9 years now and I was young and clueless tbh. I never confined her to one room but we had a tiny house anyway.
She was litter trained already and didn't have any accidents.
Think she was unsettled for 3 nights but other than that she was good as gold.
She brings dead or half dead creatures to the house daily and eats them or plays with them though, even rabbits so be aware of that.
