Was wondering if anyone has a dog that they keep outside in the day. We've been looking at getting a dog for a long time and now we are at the right time to give our attention to a dog we were wondering what dog breed is ok to be outside in the day, we would have kennel and stuff but I would like a small breed dog. Could somebody please give me some advice

Please don't do this :( Its not nice at all.

JudgeRindersMinder · 12/01/2019 10:42

Why would you get a dog and isolate it outside?

HoraceCope · 12/01/2019 10:42

Springer spaniers, so i believe

FlorencePetal · 12/01/2019 10:45

I have a Springer and she is so sociable and intelligent. It would kill her to be left outside alone all day

WhirlieGigg · 12/01/2019 10:46

Some people do this but it’s cruel imo.

potatoscone · 12/01/2019 10:47

What would be the point?

Conseulabananahammock · 12/01/2019 10:48

My fil has spaniels in a big heated outdoor kennel. However they are working dogs not pets per ce.

Well...you're not at the right time to give attention then are you.

Some dogs love being outside in the garden for a big portion of the day- but they must have the option to come inside.

multiplemum3 · 12/01/2019 10:50

Why get a pet to shut it away all day?

Inforthelonghaul · 12/01/2019 10:51

Our dog would have absolutely hated this in every way. She wanted to be with us as much as possible and it would have caused untold anxiety.

babydreamer1 · 12/01/2019 10:59

You don't sound like you do have enough time. Would you do this even in the cold, rain or snow? What a miserable life for the poor dog. Why would you need to leave your dog alone outside all day? Will you be out all day? You can't leave a dog alone for 8 hours, you'd need a dog door and a dog walker. Get a fish pond if you want outdoor pets.

WatcherOfTheNight · 12/01/2019 11:07

Please don't do this op,dogs are sociable animals who need company.
As others say ,there are working dogs but these will be a pack ,not single dogs & they will most likely have come from a similar, heated run.
I've 4 & there is no way they'd be happy outside all the time .

No breeder or rescue will let you have a dog to keep like this ,which should tell you how wrong it is !

Costacoffeeplease · 12/01/2019 11:12

You’re in a position to get a dog, but it would be outside all day? Really? Hmm

Oliversmumsarmy · 12/01/2019 11:13

If you think leaving a dog outside all day is what you do if you own a dog then maybe you shouldn’t own a dog.

Absolutely cruel.

Please don’t get a dog

potatoscone · 12/01/2019 11:14

I have a friend who calls herself an animal lover. She has 12 dogs. 3 live in the house. The rest are in outdoor kennels. They get fed and cleaned regularly, but they literally live in a small kennel/run set up. Can't quite see the point.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 12/01/2019 11:14

Don’t do that.

Your dog wants your company.

CosmicCanary · 12/01/2019 11:14

Why would you get a dog just to leave it in the garden all day?
Whats the point in having it if you are not going to give it company and attention?

TopBitchoftheWitches · 12/01/2019 11:16

My gsd refuses to go outside at the moment in the mornings as it is too cold for her.

Do not get a dog.

HoraceCope · 12/01/2019 11:16

Would it be a guard dog?
the RSPCA wouldnt bat an eyelid but probably better to have more than one.

Soubriquet · 12/01/2019 11:17

Why?!

I never get this

Why get a dog and then keep it in a kennels all day. Apart from a working dog this proves to be pointless

HoraceCope · 12/01/2019 11:18

rephrase the question op,
you will get a different answer.

fabmaz · 12/01/2019 11:18

Hi,

My dog loves going out in the garden and running round having lots of fun but also loves being inside and snuggling up on the sofa.

Make sure you can offer both inside and outside time :)

Tutlefru · 12/01/2019 11:20

I’m confused if you’ve got the time and attention to give a dog why keep it outside? Unless you’ll spend all day outside too? Confused

Don’t get a dog just to keep it outside and not in the comfort of your home.

hugoagogo · 12/01/2019 11:27

I am surprised, so many people keep their dogs indoors, I grew up with dogs that slept either in an outhouse or a proper run attached to the house. During the day they had the run of the large garden and went on long walks over the fields and were happy and loved.
We live in a small house with a tiny garden in a town- I would never keep a dog here. I have friends in similar circumstances that do, their dog is always destroying her things and making a mess- seems a bit cruel to me.

Slightlycoddled · 12/01/2019 11:30

I know working pointers and border collies who live outside. It's not usual for small breeds in the UK , although I do know a Jack Russell that prefers to spend the majority of time outside who has the option to go in ifyswim (racing stable). He'll bed himself down in piles of hay or in horse boxes quite happily but he also gets lots of human attention throughout the day. The only breed I can think of is a husky but I have my reservations about those being kept in private homes tbh (apologies to any good husky owners on here).
