My dog is growing breasts!! Is this a phantom pg or maybe mastitis(sp)?

Says it all above really, I'm going to nip her to the Vet anyway but thought I'd ask (don't want to spend a fortune if it's nothing serious).

Her tissue around a few nipples is swollen; but equally on both sides and she keeps whinging/ crying, but not as if she's in pain - it's been about 3-4 months since her last season.
Any advice or knowledge gratefully received - going to go and walk her now but will be back to check..

Thank you - been trawling the net trying to find out and went rhrough 20mins of thinking it could be pyometra but I don't think it is - made an appt for Vet tomorrow at 10, will post the outcome.
She's feeling v sorry for herself at the mo - off her food with swollen boobs, know how she feels! Just waiting for her to come and steal the toy labrador puppy my youngest has got!

Wisteria · 27/06/2007 12:11

Thanks Sniff - all advice gladly received as I'm clueless; my first bitch had already been spayed when I got her, my 2nd was a dog so no exp necessary; this is my first foray into the uncharted territory of fertile bitches!!

Update - been to the vet. It is a phantom pg.

Quite amusing really, she even has milk coming out! Vet has assured me she is not pg.

I'm not sure tbh, she's very mopey and keeps whinging. Tail seems to be between her legs when she's not being played with (unusual) and she's curled up in her basket more than normal with one of her red balls from the garden!
It's going everywhere with her!

Yes it was what your vet said! She'll be ok - it's just doing my head in with the whinging, nothing I can do to help her or explain what's happening, she's obsessed with the milk coming out of her nips at the mo - and I've still not finished the accounts I was supposed to finish yesterday, she's far more interesting!

my lab gets like this when in season whiney needy and obsessive

so it must be a bit like me with PMT poor girl

I hope it doesnt last to long do you have to take her back

Wisteria · 29/06/2007 10:22

Me too! No he said to only bring her back if it goes on more than a week or two. They can give something to help if it doesn't settle down but we are both of the opinion that nature is best in this kind of situ.
