anyone recommend dog insurance?

I've got a nova scotia duck tolling retriever puppy and I'm looking around for pet insurance for when his kennel club insurance runs out. I've never insured a dog before - I've got a 15yr old rescue collie x , but she was oldish when I got her and too expensive to insure so i never did, and she's never really needed it anyway. But I know puppies are a bit daft and I think it'd be good to insure him. I'm after a good policy that will cover the life of the dog for any disease, e.g. if he develops diabetes for example he will be covered for treatment for life, not 12mths. I've looked into the kennel club one but its very expensive - ore than I pay for car insurance! Can anyone recommend a company?

I'm insured with Direct line and they are very good. My dog needed an Op a couple of years ago and they paid out without quibble.

m and s do a really good policy with NO excess-great idea!

A little warning about M&S, they dont have an excess to pay but every time you put in a claim your premium up. so beware!!

NFU are also good. on par with other companies price wise.

I've got Lloyds. It is pretty cheap and they always paid out promptly when I claim on it.

Quick question... (I'm looking for insurance too) do they pay all the vets bills (apart from the excess) or do they just pay a percentage? Its all too confusing

bitzermaloney · 04/06/2007 22:17

I've been with m&s for three years now with 2 dogs and so far my premium has gone up once - by 25p.

MuffinMclay · 05/06/2007 09:45

Wangle - mine pays all the bill over the excess. Might depend on the policy.

I've got cat insurance with Sainsbury's. Have a look at the Moneysaving expert site as they always give good recommendations.

thanks for the advice. Wangle, some of the ones I've seen pay all above the excess until a certain age of dog, e.g. when it is 8 or 9 for example and then some of them ask you to pay the excess + say 20%, only some of them do this, you need to look at the samll print. I've got a quite from Direct Line now which looks competitive, M&S are coming up very expensive, and I'll try the others you've all suggested. Thanks for the help.

I got mine through More Than it was competitively priced and pays for life not 12 months but the excess is quite high (£75). Only made one claim so far but they paid it almost immediately, so far so good.

I think you get a discount for purchasing online too.
