Don't get the whole non refundable deposit

Looking at puppy ads on gumtree and I don't get the whole non refundable deposit. Mabye I'm being dim but is it to stop time wasters?

Don't by a let off gumtree. You have no idea what you are getting and it encourages back yard unscrupulous breeding.

Er no, it’s to make the maximum amount of money. Stop looking at Gumtree for a puppy, please, and find a legitimate breeder.

....or even better, get to Dog’s Trust and get a rescue dog or puppy.

I'm not planning on getting a puppy of gumtree I have a professional breeder I've got my eye on for when the time is right 😊 big waiting list anyways. Just a passing look when my friend was sending me pics of cute puppies on there

Non refundable deposits from reputable breeders are to stop time wasters and holding a dog so no one else can buy it only to have the buyer change their mind. I guess gumtree sellers use it so people can't get educated before taking their dogs and pull out without losing some money during the process.
I understand why sellers ask for non refundable deposits. But I don't get gumtree breeders full stop.
