He is 5 and a rescue cat, perfectly healthy the vet says (she checked him out) but just pukes a lot (several times a week, sometimes just spit, sometimes mostly fur, occasionally actual food - boak).

My last cat was never sick, so it's a bit of a surprise and frankly a pain. At least we mostly have wooden floorboards which are easy to clean, but - on the stair carpet! On our bed! On our (fortunately quite old) velvet sofa!

I mean how do you get cat sick out of a velvet sofa??! And how do I get him to puke less (or ideally not at all)? Already have 2 very messy kids and really wasn't banking on having to constantly clear up after the pet as well!

You say fur and spit. He is having trouble with furballs. You can buy a paste ( best one called Katalax) or treats that help the fur pass through them. I should imagine a load of fur in your tummy is uncomfortable and better out than in.
