Best insurance provider

Hi, do you have any good or bad experience with any particular insurance providers? I'm currently with petplan for my 4 yr old dog on a high level of cover and they're fantastic, but I can't keep up the payments of this cover any more. I haven't had to claim for a couple of years now and my dog has no health conditions so I don't know whether it's worth keeping this level of cover on the off chance I need to claim, or whether to lower the cover or switch to a different provider. Any advice would be really helpful.

Some vets surgeries have their own pet plan. The one I use is great. They are called Orchard and have a few surgeries is West Midlands but I'm sure there must be similar places elsewhere. I registered my dog with them as soon as I got her at 4 months old. I pay £25 a month but this varies depending on size/breed. For that you get their yearly immunisation boosters, check ups, any treatment your dog may need due to illness or injury and claw cutting etc. you only really have to pay for medication but you get 20% off that too. It's really handy if you have any concerns and you just want a vet to have a look, this is also included in your monthly fee. My previous vets used to charge £38 just to have a look which is quite a lot, especially if there's nothing wrong but you just wanted them to check something for you. There's no hassle with paying excess or claiming anything back through your insurance company. When I joined this service was only available to puppies and kittens but they have just started to make it available to adult animals.
Hope this helps. If you can find a local surgery that offers their own plan I would recommend it. It's reassuring to know that if anything happened to my beloved dog who is now 8 I can get her treated without the added worry of finding the money.

Anything you have consulted your vet for can be viewed as a preconditioned illness so be aware if you change providers. I would be upfront on claims and anything you may have asked about e.g. limp, ears, runny eyes etc to make sure you don't get caught out later thinking it's a great deal but then find out you aren't covered for conditions arising just because you consulted about some vague symptoms earlier.
