My female gave birth 5 weeks ago

I am not a breeder before anyone gets the wrong idea. I am asking for advice. My female dog gave birth to a healthy litter 5 weeks ago and now is humping toys etc, she was doing this just before they mated. Can she get pregnant so soon after giving birth, I am worried as our male isn’t getting his balls choped for another 3 weeks and her health/recovery is more important. I spoke to our vets receptionist who was rather Rude to me saying “she won’t give advice to a breeder, I shouldn’t have a dog if that’s all I want them for”, It really upset me and was in tears with what she said, I am not a breeder my fur babies are my children so through this I googled my question and led me to this site. So can anyone help me with my question without any abuse. Thank you Flowers

If you aren’t a breeder why have you chosen to mate your dog? Hmm

StickyHandPrintsOnMyFace · 30/03/2018 02:42

Giving you the benefit of the doubt... Halo

A friend's foster dog came into heat. To keep the dog safe from unwelcome advances, she bought dog underpants. Google dog underpants for heat and you'll find heaps of options.

And keep your dogs separated and get both desexed asap FFS. Hmm

Bitches tend to keep to their cycle even after having puppies so it’s possible if she has a short season cycle.

What was the gap between the season before she was mated and the one she fell pregnant on? If she has a natural (and unusual) 4 monthly cycle then it’s possible. Most pugs have a 6-8 month cycle so you should be ok.

If she is pregnant she needs to be spayed for her own health. Having another litter of puppies so close to this one won’t be good for her at all.

Keep her and the male separate until he’s been castrated and then follow the vets advice on how long to separate them for after the surgery. Also, book your bitch into be spayed as soon as possible, again your vet will be able to advise on the best timing of this.

Please complain about the receptionist - that kind of attitude isn’t at all helpful.

Just keep your male away from her. Common sense I would have thought!

Hugapug22 · 30/03/2018 03:22

Abbey hugapug is what I choose for a user name I don’t have fff pugs they are shih Tzu’s which are very common. FYI money is not an issue in my life unlike some. Jumping to conclusions I would sell the babies is a joke, I have my own property/Land for all of my fur babies to live with me. I wouldn’t dream of selling the pups my babies created them and will stay with us !

I didn’t choose to mate them she had finished her season (bleed) and I kept the male away from her for 2 extra weeks.

Thank you
I did have doggy nappies on her but I will invest in some pants as well.
I am just hoping it’s something she likes doing for the feeling it gives her, Cliff will be staying with my mother in law until his opp for extra safety, Rosemary will be getting spaid in 4 1/2 months time as the vet said 6 months after the date she gave birth, this is when the 3 pups will be old enough to be done as well.
Thank you again for not judging and giving me advice, Yes I will be reporting the receptionist as I have her name and details of the time date etc I shall be doing this in person on Tuesday as they are closed for Easter weekend.

Apologies - I also assumed pugs from your user name

Make sure you keep an eye on Rosemary as she may come into season before the pups are 6 mths old, and it’s possible (if you had a boy in the litter) that she may fall pregnant again.

Hugapug22 · 30/03/2018 03:45

It’s ok easy mistake at least you didn’t give abuse maitlandGirl. Rosemary had 1 boy Arther and 2 girls Poppy and Lilly.
I shall be keeping a close eye on them. My mother has taken a liking to Arther (she named him) I will have a word with my father and surprise her with Arther, this way no more happy accidents. Rosemary and Cliff can see him grow as they live across from us.

I love your dogs names :)

I would have said if there wasn’t a specific reason your male had to wait three weeks a different vet could probably have done it sooner. The males recover very quickly and it’s a really quick operation. When I was in the vets they could do loads in a day. The receptionist has already been rude so it might not be the worst idea to ring a different vet and just explain the situation and ask ....

YearOfYouRemember · 02/04/2018 19:27

Please spell Arthur correctly or you'll spend his life correcting forms.

Beaverhausen · 11/04/2018 13:04

Hi Hugapug,

She most certainly can fall pregnant as soon as 4 weeks after having pups. There is a spray you can buy off the internet that masks the smelll if she is back on heat.

Also as for the receptionist, I would make a complaint and change vets you do not need that kind of attitude.
