Carpet cleaner and cats

Anyone managed to clean a carpet with cats, if so what did you use?
I only have carpet on the stairs and they are in serious need of a wash. But stuck about what to use. Don't want to rent a carpet cleaner to do the stairs.
Locking them in a room isn't an option, they are door openers.
Help.

Sorry if I’m being a bit think but I’m not sure why you can’t clean the carpet when you have cats.
I have 2 and a large dog and like you only carpet on the stairs.
I have used a carpet cleaner but also surface wipes ( carpet is dark grey)

Because of the chemicals and them running up and down the stairs and licking their paws. So wondering what everyone uses.

Soap and water will do the job and will not harm the cats at all. The best thing is a Vax. I bought one and lend it to all my friends when they want to wash their carpets. It is easy to use and leaves it all fresh and clean and smelling nice. Of course the cats will then like to sleep on the clean carpet!

I have a cat and a dog. I should say, it is not easy for me to clean carpets, so I do understand you. When it is warm outside, I roll up all carpets in my house.
