Cranial Cruciate Ligament Damage in Dogs

Does anyone know anything about this and possible successful treatments for this. My dog is limping and seems reluctant to put her hind leg down, she has had X-rays and they think she may need an operation which involves cutting the bone and shifting the two leg bones so that they are closer together and the ligament works better but this sounds a huge intrusion and I was wondering if anyone know of another treatment?

My (now dead) dog damaged her cruciate ligament and was on three legs. After X-rays we found she also had arthritis. The vet decided it wasn't worth operating and was better to rest her and give pain killers. We did that. She only went in the garden for the loo for a month, then just in our field for little walks. Within six months she was running around with our other dogs and doing short walks. I was amazed how well she did. She was 9. I think a lot of vets push for operations nowadays. If she'd been younger we may have considered it more.

Honey roar, thank you for that. I still don't which way to go but do not like the thought of this big operation, she is nearly 9 so may be best to rest and see.
