As I'm thinking of getting this dog from the rspca who likes cats.

But unsure about it!

Trust me, it doesn’t

If you've never had a dog and it's 11, your cat will probably be terrified.

Your car does not like dogs or any other animals in his house.

Have you never seen our cat outside when in the street when a dog comes along?

PinkBuffalo · 27/12/2017 22:04

I really wouldn't do this to a cat personally

An 11 year old cat will hate dogs and will be quite traumatised

I introduced an 11 year old lurcher to a 4 year old cat. Supervised in the sane room. The dog was curious and sniffed the cat. The cat scratched the dogs nose. Pecking order was then set and they lived fairly harmoniously until the dog died at 15.

You know your cat - how old is the dog?

It definitely won't like dogs. It won't like any other animal coming into its home.

I think some of the replies are unreasonably pessimistic. I had 2 cats when I got my first puppy, I think they were 10 and 14 and had never lived with a dog. We didn't have any problems - the cats were always in charge & the dog grew up being sensibly wary of them. I think an adult dog could be quite different, but not necessarily - it depends whether by 'likes cats' they mean the dog is overfriendly and likes playing with cats (unlikely to work) or that it has lived with cats and knows to give them space and respect them (should be fine). Could you discuss it with the rescue centre and maybe have a trial or home visit to see how your cat reacts?

I have a 13 year old cat and 6 months ago had to take in my parents 5 year dog. We were quite confident about the dog as he is calm, laid back sort but we were not sure about the cat as he can flaky and had never met a dog. We gave them separation using a stair gate with a small door which allowed the cat through but not the dog. Yes there was wariness at first. The cat just steadily built up his confidence and now they are fine together even sharing the sofa. I would also recommend giving the cat somewhere he can sit up high and observe the dog.

I would imagine any 11 yo cat that has not lived with a dog will be quite put out about having to share houseroom with one at that age .
