Dog aggression

Hi I've got a spaniel cross he's 3 and we had him from a pup. He's become aggressive over the past year. It seems like for no reason he can just turn and be aggressive towards me and my son. My husband left for OW 6 months ago so I'm on my own and can't afford training. I'm just scared he's going to bite as it's just so unexpected When he starts to growl and snarl . I'm torn between getting rid of trying other things but at the min we are scared of our pet!

Have you taken him to a vet? It can be a sign of pain.

Wolfiefan · 10/12/2017 12:44

What are the triggers?

fessmess · 10/12/2017 12:44

I'm no expert but from my understanding underlying medical reasons need to be ruled out, trip to vet needed. Spaniels seem big on resource guarding so does your dog get arse when moved or when something's taken away? If so then a positive alternative needs to be offered. However if you're this worried then I would get a behaviourist in. Good luck.

I second the vet visit.
Could it be due to your husband leaving?
Dogs can be affected by change and act out just as humans do.

Jaxhog · 10/12/2017 12:46

Take him to the vet in case something serious is wrong.

It could be that your OH was 'top dog' and now the dog is challenging you for the position. It could be worth looking on you tube for a dog training course. You do need to assert yourself though or the aggression could get worse.

Ignore Jaxdog and anyone who talks about too dog. Dominance theory is a load of cobblers.

BiteyShark · 10/12/2017 12:59

First vet visit to rule out anything medical.

Is this really a new behaviour or is it something that has been getting worse? Trying to gauge how much training he has had in the past.

Could your ex take him? Would he pay for a behaviourist?

Layniboggs123 · 10/12/2017 17:52

His behaviour has always been a bit like this but has recently got worse.we could just be stroking him n then it's like he's had enough so growls . He then shakes like he's scared I'm gonna hurt him (Never gave reason for this) . Hes worse with my son . Ex isn't interested he's too busy enjoying new life . Think trip gets 1st then back to basics I think x thanks everyone xx

Good luck at the vet. I would also ensure he has a safe place where nobody will bother him. I would try and stop stroking him before he's had enough. Is it one particular place?
Could it be related to when ex left? Upset him? What's his routine like?
