Tell me about dogs with hairy ears.

My little dog has very hairy ear oles. This afternoon he's been demented scratching them til one is bleeding.

I read somewhere that hairy eard dogs were predisposed to problems, but I don't know what kind. I've put his plastic collar on from when he had the snip so he can't do any more damage but he looks miserable and uncomfortable. Any tips other than the vet on Momnday to get him through the weekend?

What breed? Low shedding dogs, like terriers and spaniels, generally need the hair in the inside of the ear stripped out (pulled out) by hand. A build up of hair can cause awful discomfort. Thornit powder is superb for ear problems.

It is too difficult to recommend anything over the net as you don't know the actual problem, could be mites or an infection. I would wait until the vet has had a look and then start researching treatments and prevention. If your dog is still in severe distress on Monday, ask the vet to give him something to take away the pain as well as something to treat the condition. Hope you get him sorted out soon. It's awful when they are so distressed and you don't know how to help them. Let us know how you get on at the vets.

Thanks Joannie2. He's a yorkie cross, with a yorkie coat, so he is non shedding.

I hope it is a hair problem then as it should be easy enough to fix (though God help the groomer who tries to strip his ears!)

I will let you know how it goes on Monday.
