If you stroke her throat while you're holding her mouth closed then it makes her swallow involuntarily.

Still not fool proof mind you but it worked for me most times.

CarGirl · 10/04/2007 14:43

get a pill dropper thing from the vets to get it further down the back of her throat.

Crush it up and mix it with katakax or primula apread and smear onto paws so they lick it off.

Best of luck, nightmare!

Hi,

Not sure how old your cat is but my vet said there was a type of liquid medication we could mix with her food. Unfortunately before we could start it she had a stroke and had to be put down(was 16). However, like you we had dreadful problems getting a tablet into her - might be worth asking the vet about the liquid stuff - how old is she?

Blackduck · 10/04/2007 14:44

Have youo crushed it up into food? (sounds like one of ;my mum's cats, she would actually swallow and then when you let her go spit it at you )

charliecat · 10/04/2007 14:45

We put it in butter and then clamp shut and rub neck. Works ok.

aragon · 10/04/2007 14:45

whoops - dreadful grammer - meant to say that there was a liquid medicine the vet said we could mix with our cat's food.

Trinityrhino · 10/04/2007 14:45

you need to wrap her in a towel so that sharp claws are contained

then you need to pop it in her mought , hold her mouth shut and then pull her head back alittle and stroke her neck till she swallows. the head being held up and back and the stroking should induce swallowing

How to Give a Cat a Tablet
(Or Why We Own Dogs)
Pick the cat up and cradle in the crook of your left arm as if holding a baby. Position right forefinger and thumb on either side of cat's mouth and gently apply pressure to cheeks while holding pill in right hand. As cat opens mouth pop pill into it, allow cat to close mouth and swallow.

Retrieve pill from floor and cat from behind the sofa. Cradle cat in left arm and repeat process.

Retrieve cat from bedroom and throw soggy pill away.

Take new pill from foil wrap, cradle cat in left arm holding rear paws tightly with left hand. Force jaws open and push pill to back of mouth with right forefinger. Hold mouth shut for a count of ten.

Retrieve pill from goldfish bowl and cat from top of wardrobe. Call partner in from garden.

Kneel on floor with cat wedged firmly between knees, hold front and rear paws. Ignore low growls emitted by cat. Get partner to hold head firmly with one hand while forcing wooden ruler into mouth. Drop pill down ruler and rub cat's throat vigorously.

Retrieve cat from curtain rail, get another pill from the foil wrap. Make note to buy a new rule and repair curtains. Carefully sweep shattered 'Dolton' figurines from hearth and set to one side for gluing later.

Wrap cat in large towel and get partner to lie on cat with head just visible from below armpit. Put pull in end of drinking straw, force cat's mouth open with pencil and blow down drinking straw.

Check label to make sure pills not harmful to humans, drink glass of water to take taste away. Apply plaster to partners forearm and remove blood from carpet with cold water and soap.

Retrieve cat from neighbours shed and get another pill. Place cat in cupboard and close door onto neck to leave head showing. Force mouth open with dessert spoon and flick pill down throat with elastic band.

Fetch screwdriver from garage and put door back on hinges. Apply cold compress to cheek and check records for date of last tetanus jab. Throw t-shirt away and fetch new one from bedroom.

Ring fire brigade to retrieve cat from tree across the road and apologise to neighbour who crashed into fence while swerving to avoid the cat. Take last pill from foil wrap.

Tie cats front paws to rear paws with garden twine and bind tightly to leg of dining table, find heavy duty pruning gloves from shed and pry cat's mouth open with a small spanner. Push pill into mouth followed by a large piece of fillet steak. Hold head vertically and pour a pint of water down throat to wash down pill.

Get partner to drive you to ER and sit quietly while doctor stitches fingers and forearms and removes pill remnants from right eye. Call at furniture shop on way home to order new table.

Arrange for RSPCA to collect cat. Ring local pet shop to see if they have any hamsters.

Wrap it in bacon!

RB - was waiting for someone to come in with that one - hilarious.

chilledmama · 10/04/2007 14:47

Do the open mouth thing again but this time when you are holding closed her mouth stroke her throat which creates the impulse to swallow. Once you see her swallow a couple of times she has probably swallowed the pill.

chilledmama · 10/04/2007 14:49

LOL with tears Rusty

charliecat · 10/04/2007 14:50

and wrap it in butter too

Earlybird · 10/04/2007 14:52

Everytime I see this thread title, I think of those books called "If you give a Moose a muffin" and "If you give a mouse a cookie"....which I know is no help at all to your dlemma!

Hope you get some useful suggestions!

try just holding it out to her - she might just take it from you. My mog fought for months to avoid tablets then started just licking them up from the floor.

This works with worming tablets for cats... if you crush each tablet and wrap it in foil, place it in the coldest part of the fridge/freezer. Mix with a tiny bit of favourite food and give immediately. The smell of the tablet reduces as the temperature drops and the cat can't smell it.
Worth a try?

grouchyoscar · 10/04/2007 16:53

hmmmmn

smear pill liberally in butter

Open cat's mouth and shove it in

hold cat's mouth shut and stroke her nose. The cat will lick her nose and an automatic reflex of licking is swallowing.

Pill in cat

Best of luck with it

crush it between two teaspoons and wrap her in a towel have someone hold her mouth open and pour it in. or see if you can mix the crushed tablet in a small amount of water and use a pippete to squirt it in her mouth while she is wrapped in towel etc.

Spidermama · 10/04/2007 22:42

If the going gets tough, push head of cat through jumper sleeve to crfeate strait jacket effect, open cat's mouth by placing finger between top two fangs, push tablet gently down throat, then apologise for all you're worth and free cat.

You could do all this without the jumper if cat is relaxed and sleepy enough and you can creep up on her, but if she's already suspicious you'll have to use the jumper.
