Beloved cat killed last night - devistated

We have moved from a busy town where we were at a main road to the country 3 months ago. Herculese our beloved big teddy bear was always an our side cat and never had problems with roads. Last night I had my doorbell rang and thanfulky some kind lady stopped to inform me that a car in front speeding had hit him and unfortunatly he was dead. I went out and it was him totally devistated, and angry. The person never stoped and they had been goinh that fast that the grill of there car was in bits all over the road. My son is 7 we've had Hercules since he was 1 he was a rescued cat about 8 when we got him but today my son is heartbroken and I've hardly slept. All the what it's in my head what if I took him in last night I feel it's my fault. I am heartbroken and can't stop crying. Everyine I go to the front door I expect to see him or going to the kitchen I expect him to cime out the dining room wanting fed and going in the cat flap. I am coping terribly and I dont want my son to keep seeing me so distraut as i dont want to make him nore up set. I am so lost and sad and angry and such a feeling of emotions. I can't bring myself to go through the shed as that's where his tray and food etc was I had my mum help bury him and asked her to take all his stuff as i couldn't cope seeing it. I just felt like I needed to get this off my chest and don't want to seem to friends that I am overreacting over a cat. He wasn't just a cat to me he was family and much loved. My poor boy I just have no words for my emotions. How does one cope with such a tragic death of a family pet? Am I being to sensitive and silly?

Sorry that you have lost your lovely cat.

Unfortunately dealing with this and teaching your son how to deal with loss is all part of living, being the parent etc.

You will get over it.

He was a cat that had 14 years, amazing for a cat. You can teach your son to love the cat, mourn his loss and understand how lucky you were to have him for all those years.

It's ok for your son to see you sad over a cat but you do need to keep it in perspective also for you both. I say that gently as an owner of both cats and dogs whom I adore. They are part of the family makeup but it's not actually like losing a family member. I have lost my son.

I understand what your saying but the loss of my big bear I feel like my heart is breaking. All the what ifs......what if I kept him in last night instead! What if the car wasn't speeding....What if......it hurts all the same and my heart is aching tonight as much as this time last night when that door bell rang and i was devistated.

P.s I am so very sorry for the loss of your son. I am in no way saying the pain of loss is on par with a child but it's defnatly a pain that hurts and feel it will be with me and the guilt over the what ifs for a long time to come.

So sorry for your loss x

Mollybear12 · 31/08/2017 00:22

I'm so sorry , I can only imagine how upset u are, my cat is 18, and I'm terrified of anything happening to him, I just love him sooo much he's the only constant family member I've ever had and he's only ever given me love, he's such a baby , not a normal cat. I would be devastated so just try and take some deep breaths, I'm so sorry this has happened to you, big hugs xx

Lost Lily, my gorgeous cat, last Friday morning, hit by a car. She would be one year old on the 5th of September. A very healthy cat, outdoor most of the time, loving as I have no words to explain. The pain we all feel, including a ten years old boy, whose first pet she was, is devastating. How can we stop this absurd accidents? I have done some research and found a device for dogs, a special colar that can limit the teritory by emitting a harmless shock. Does anyone know if anything like this is available for cats as well? I can't imagine keeping a cat indoor only, I would better not have one at all. .

I am sorry for your loss, Apple, I had the same with our beautiful Daisy, and she was a real character, and a rescue cat as well. You and your family gave him a lovely home, and cared for him.

CoolCarrie · 03/09/2017 15:48

DancesWithOtters, thank you, that is a brilliant idea, I am going to do that for Daisy and our other lost pets.

Hi,
The average life for cats that go out free range is only 5 years,
So maybe consider having a house cat like myself.

Firstly I'm really sorry to hear of your loss, similar happened to me years ago, which is probably now why I have ended up with a houseful of beautiful cats.
I show cats all over Europe and feel I can offer some advice.
No one cat will ever take the place of him but having a new cat/kitten will help you to move on because the new comers will have needs and therefore give you some one to focus on to help you away from this terrible time.

Worldsworstcook · 04/11/2017 20:29

At least the bastard who did it will be saddled with a huge bill - your cat may have tragically died but he's laughing his little socks off in heaven at the annoyance and expense this shithead is currently facing.

Sorry for you loss. No one would ever think you're overreacting and if they do they'll be lumped in with the car driving shithead in my book.
