What cat should I buy?

I am looking into buying a cat but I have no idea what one to go for.

I am semi allergic, however the longer I stay with a cat the more I get over the sneezing.

I was looking at Russian blues as I've heard they are good with allergy suffers, then I looked at the price!!! ShockShockShock

I am ideally looking for a cat that wants to be loved and cuddled but is also independent enough to be left alone on its own in the day.

Any suggestions?

Wondered why you want to buy a cat when there are loads of lovely and suitable cats in rescues?

Ragdolls are brilliant if you are allergic. However I was hideously allergic to cats when I was little, contact with my dad was a battle as he had 5. I did get over it and have rescued the most gorgeous little tabby. It took a week or two of sneezing and 5 years later ... Well... She sleeps on my face. So I think whatever you get you can push through. Look at rescuing. It's much much better!

Xeneth are you sure you didn't just grow out of it?

If you are allergic OP then you will react to all cats just some less severely. Certain breeds don't produce or produce less of an enzyme than can cause a reaction.

I would adopt, even if you are after a pedigree or specific breed they are available. So many cats are abandoned or in need of a home.

Adopt, don't shop! If you're set on a breed then contact the uk car society for that breed as they often have waiting lists for rescued breeds e.g. when an owner dies, or the cat doesn't get on with other pets .

I'm looking for breeds I should get. I am open to adopting but need to know what ones to look for first...

No. I didn't, I was 26 when I adopted Willow. I was so desperate for a cat and can't have a dog due to work etc. It was a rough few weeks but I adjusted to it, if she scratches me I still get lumpy but general day to day life is fine.

Rescue, don't buy, we have had some amazing cats from rescue.

There is a ragdoll rehoming site, we used this when my grandmother died and we had to rehome hers, Id have had them but Willows rather anti cats Confused maybe give them a call OP.

Somali and Abyssinian have the most amazing personalities- check out the breed websites for rehoming opportunities.

I wonder if a Devon or Cornish Rex would be good as their fur is incredibly short.

Oh lovely! I will have a look at these breeds.

If we adopt we'd need to get a kitten as we have a chinchilla. Chinchillas are prey animals so are extremely nervous. Our little chap literary poops himself if he hears a noise. We've read that the best way to introduce a cat is to ensure it's a kitten so they are small enough to not be overwhelmed and built it up slowly.

Oh and chinchillas live 20 years and ours is only 2 years old Confused

Best of luck! There's lots of little kittens/young cats out there that need a new home, please explore those options first. Willow was 2 and tiny when I rescued her, she wasn't hugely bigger than a kitten. Now shes a lump. I hope you find the right pet for you!

I don't see the problem in buying a cat from a breeder. As long as you go to a reputable breeder who is TICA or GCCF accredited- it isn't your responsibility to rescue a cat when someone else couldn't be bothered to look after it any more. Rag dolls are lovely placid cats so may be good with a chinchilla.

I have a rescue ragdoll, her owner died. She doesn't moult anything like the short hair moggy I had before. I have a friend who is highly allergic to cats and she is fine with my ragdoll. She is very soppy and amazingly tolerant with my girls. She spent the first few years of her life with an elderly gentleman, and has adapted to busy family life beautifully. She likes to sit outside under the bird table and watch them. We had l baby squirrel in the garden once and she groomed it! She did kill a Wood louse once but that was an accident! She is definitely not a hunter!

What cat should I buy?

No cat breed will be hypo allergenic. It's not just the fur you may be allergic too. You may actually be allergic to the saliva. How will you feel if you take on a cat and have to give it up?

I also recommend ragdolls. I have 2 and they just flop when you pick them up and love a cuddle on the lap. One of mine also fights with us every night to be allowed to get under the bed covers. Cute till she stretches and accidentally claws your legs Grin

My mum has a very well bred Ragdoll and most days he leaves at least another whole cat on the various chairs with the amount of hair that comes out of him , I fail to see how he would be good for anyone with allergies .

By your logic you are prioritising animals? Those poor kitty cats can't sit in rescue centres but it's totally fine for children to languish in care their whole childhood 🤔 Maybe try not preaching to people about how to live their lives? It's doing no one any harm if someone chooses to be a responsible owner and get the cat they want based on their preferences and lifestyle. Being so sanctimonious won't make people agree with you
