Are guinea pigs supposed to be nervous?

Got our first last August. took everyones advice and we have had an 8 week old baby for 3 weeks. They get on like a house on fire and other one seems really happy.
Thing is both of them run when we open the hutch doors and are hard to pick up.
The baby was initially a lot easier to handle when we got him at 5 weeks.
Is it something I am doing wrong?
They are scared of the slightest sound!

i don't think you are doing anything wrong they're just very nervous.
don't make the mistake i did and just give up trying-you need to handle them at every opportunity.(hard i know when they won't let you near them.get them used to noise-music,tv,kids etc.)obviously not blasting, they are like rabbits and can have heart attacks if they get too frightened.
also let them out of the cage to roam about as much as poss, that way it'll make them more likely to come to you when you open the cage.
its a good thing you have two so they can keep each other company,my poor thing was on his own.he hated being handled from day one so i just left him-obviously fed, watered him etc but wish i'd got him used to being handled more.

Guninea pigs are naturally nervous creatures. Ours always runs to the back of the hutch when we open it. If when you hold them they make chuntering noises at you then they are 'happy'. Keep handling them so they are used to it.

Guinea pigs are completely neurotic.

We kept a rabbit and a guinea pig together. Rabbit kept trying to shag the guniea pig. perhaps that's why ours was neurotic.

Yes they don't liked to be cuddled or anything

HotCrossPenguin · 29/03/2007 21:55

Or shagged by 'rampant rabbits'
