Hamster - what do I need?

Hi I've had hamsters younger.!

Which type is best? I'd prefer to have two. Is this ok? Which sex?

They are for my kids. Which ate more friendly?

Which cage?

Does the cage need two wheels and 2 water bottles?

I've heard they can no longer go in those balls. Is this true?

Mine has a dwarf thing in a pets at home cage. It goes in its ball while we clean the cage but is just handled normally at other times. You wouldn't need two water bottles and I wouldn't bother with two wheels. If you ask in the pet shop they will tell how big the cage will need to be.

No don't ask the pet shop. They sell ridiculous tiny prisons that they think are suitable.

Russians and Chinese can live in pairs. However, after owning 18 of them I'm yet to successfully manage a pair. They all, bar none, have had to be separated to avoid lost limbs.

I'd get one Syrian. Bigger, easier to handle.

Cage needs to be massive. Mine are currently in Savic Hamster Heavens, but any cage approx 80cm x 50 cm will be fine.

I really wanted a Syrian. Could I get two and keep them separate. Baring in mind if my kids hold them they might sense eachother?

Are dwarfs ok with being held by children?

My 6 year old handles the dwarf absolutely fine. So does the four year old. She has been really good. She's very sociable in the evenings and the dog loves her. They touch noses and then get on with whatever they were doing
