Can anyone please tell me what they are like as pets?
I know that they need regular clipping and bathing but how much exercise do they need?
I've read that they are very intelligent and easily trained but does this make them hard to keep amused, like collies?
Any advice would be great

Thankyou

they make the best police dogs, apparently. That's temperament, but not appearance

My friend has one. He is still only a year and bounces around like a nutter - certainly seems to have endless energy. He has responded really well to training (they are clicker training) and has not been destructive, but my friend or her dh are around all day and devote a lot of time to entertaining him. Having seen how quickly he picks up tricks I would have thought they need to occupy their brains a lot to stop them from getting bored. That's only one dog though; guess they are all different!

hi, I've had a standard for 7 years now,not my first choice of dog, we normally have gsd's, but we took him on at 2 years old as we new his owner and he couldn't keep him anymore. Fantastic dog, intelligent, loyal, great guard dog, great family dog, superb temperment, lots of fun. The downside is this is not a breed for a novice dog owner or someone looking for a low maintenance pet. They demand a lot of exercise and company and need professional grooming which can be quite costly depending on your area. However I have been won over to this breed and would definitely get another when the time comes which hopefully wont be anytime soon!
