We're thinking about getting a puppy but don't know where to start.

Have a 19 month old dd so is it even a good idea to have a puppy? Want something small. Have had a quick look and was thinking about a Shih Tzu but really have no idea is this would be a good breed to have with a toddler or not?

If anyone could recommend a good website where I could get good solid information from then that would be great or if anyone has any advice themselves that would be even better

Also where do you buy a particular dog breed from? Have seen adverts but no idea what I should be looking for? KC Registered/free insurance/wormed/vet checked? There's so much that I don't know about but don't want to just jump into get a dog. Want to think it through properly first and know what to expect.

Sorry this is so long didn't intend it to be. Thanks

Wow JustUsTwo, that info you have given me is great and really useful. I now have a much better idea of what to look out for and what to expect, thanks

Is a Carin Terrier the dog from The Wizard of Oz? Have been looking at those too, sooooooo adorable. How's yours getting on?

Will no go nd have a look at the websites you've linked for me. Thanks so much, really appreciate it

Personally I would wait until your dd is older. Puppies are so much work it will be like having a new baby in the house. I know so many people that have got puppies at this age and ended up getting rid of them because it is such hard work. I would wait until your dd is around 4.

I would definitely advise that you attend dog training classes my sister did and her dog turned out to be a very well behavioured family pet.
