Anyone had a pet microchipped? Is this normal?

My cat was chipped last Friday. She now has a patch of fur missing, about the size of a 20 pence piece where they did the microchip.

I can't get a real close look cause she won't let me but it looks red, sore and a bit 'glazed' as if it's being weeping.

Is this normal?

If not another visit to the vets in order I think.

My cat has been chipped but I don't remember her being sore with it. Why not ring the vet and ask them if they think she needs to be checked.

northerner · 28/02/2007 17:10

Yeah I've just done that. I asked them if it was normal. They ferused to comment and said they will see her if I am worried.

Don't want more cost if its needeless IYSWIM!!

When did she have it done?

nally · 28/02/2007 17:12

Both cats were chipped when we moved to our house 6 years ago. No sore bits though afterwards.

SparklyGothKat · 28/02/2007 17:13

I have had my dog and 1 of my cat chipped must get the other cats chipped) and never had that problem.

northerner · 28/02/2007 17:22

Lst Friday Nab. She's on my lap now and I'm convinced it's not right. Looks like she's been branded with a hot iron. There is congeled blood in it too and absolutley no hair.

Could you try and bathe it and then see how it is. Is she all right in her self and eating? If the vet has done it a bit wrong and casued this then you shouldn't have to pay anything extra. You could say to them you are worried about the cost of a check up and it may be free after an op.

prettybird · 28/02/2007 17:40

We've had three cats chipped (2 together and another one later, when one of the original two died and was replced) and never had this.

Does sound like it has got infected - it is very much the reaction our cats get when they have been in a fight and a scratch as got infected.

If you are abosultely sure it is in the place where the micro chip was ijected I'd take your cat back, and if they try to charge, challenge them to say it's Not die to the chip.

Alternatively, your cat could coincidentally have got into a fight and been nicked in the same place.

magnolia1 · 28/02/2007 17:40

There should be no soreness at all! Your vet is at liberty to see the cat again (no cost) to check it has been done corectly.

PrincessPeaHead · 28/02/2007 17:41

my dogs were chipped and there wasn't anything to show it had been done.

yours sounds not at all normal, def go to vets and I wouldn't accept a charge I must say

northerner · 28/02/2007 20:23

Thanks guys. Have bathed it tonight with warm water and she let me, so it can't hurt her. But it looks afwul.

Its on the bcak of her neck - where you would put flea drops. Is this where chip goes?

Will take her to vets tommorrow.

She has not got in a fight as it developed after FRiday when we collected her from vets and she's not been out yet due to speying.

poor wee pet, i would take her back too. they shouldn't charge if it's from the chipping. hope she's better soon. x

booradley · 01/03/2007 00:56

Hi - most definately not normal. Vet should sort it out. hope this helps.

nathaliea · 01/03/2007 01:00

i know a dog who is microchipped and is absolutely fine

PrincessPeaHead · 01/03/2007 07:25

yes, they put it in the sort of scruff of the neck, where you can grab a bit of flesh IYSWIM

she must have an infection, I'd take her to the vet before she gets a blood infection or something

junkinmytrunk · 01/03/2007 07:30

I'd def take her to see the vet.
My dog was chipped about a month ago and she never had any sores of any kind.

They don't sound very helpful tho or maybe just a snotty recepionist (sorry receptionist's)

They shouldn't charge you to be seen

northerner · 01/03/2007 09:57

Well it looks loads better today after I bathed it. It is clean and not as big but still there.

She's back at teh vets on Monday anyway for stitches out so I'll see if we can hold off till then....

She's fine in herself, eating and charging aruond like a nutter

Thanks all.

northerner have you got any antibiotic cream hangning around - like fucidin or something? might be worth rubbing a bit of that into her if you have it.

As far as i know this isnt normal. however its a damn big needle! bigger than normal vaccinations etc. My cat and dog are chipped. my cad had a lump under the skin for about a week after. My dog was fine. It could be an infection. keep bathing and playit by ear. take to the vets if it bothers your cat though
