Cat Abscess

My 6year old cat got an abscess on the side of his back leg. It popped a few days ago and I have been cleaning it constantly since with a warm cloth. He stays calm while i do it which is a great thing for me :)
He hasnt lost his appetite or his energy, and there arent any changes in his behavior and he's full of energy as usual.
But how and when exactly do I know if it has healed? And can I used an antibiotic ointment on his leg?
I called the vet, who could not care less, and he quoted a huge amount just for the consultation but reading the previous threads here made me feel better as I don't think its very serious. I have dealt with all kinds of cat injuries before but this is the first time with an abscess, thanks to my neighbor who keeps bringing in all the street cats and neglecting them. Any help would be great.
TIA Grin

That's interesting! I think one of mine has an abscess but it's going down now, since we noticed it. Perfectly well in other respects. Keeping an eye...

Keep it clean and importantly drained, you can just use sudocreme on it that's fine. If you need to put a cone on him to stop him licking and grooming it then by all means do.if it doesn't look like it's starting to heal or looks to be getting worse then he'll need to go to the vets as it may be infected.
Unless it's on the joint I would worry, if it is near he going an X-ray may be required to check it hasn't got into the joint.

My boy had one on his face. I kept it clean with cooled boiled water but it kept getting worse And eventually clearly infected. Ended up at the vets and it was antibiotics and anti inflammatories and he was on the mend fast.

My boy got very lethargic when it tipped over so watch him closely.

Well hes still very active like his usual self. But i am confused because how and when will I know that its done? I do keep cleaning it but the wound has kind of dried now. Its been almost a week so I am not sure if this is the end.

Once there's no more pus it'll dry up and start to scab it'll then heal as a cut would. If it's not producing pus and not open, weeping or looking sore then it sounds like it's healing fine.
