Boy or Girl Pigs? Can quite decide. Are boys more docile or girls? Or depends?

I can't honestly say I am basing this on a huge sample, but we've got two boys and they are sweet and docile as anything, like to be cuddled.

We were advised to buy two boys as apparently they get along better and are more docile.

One just died and now i feel sorry for the one left alone! .

HunieBuniesBack · 13/02/2007 21:00

I hope so. I has taken me over 2 years to conclude to get guinea pigs....

Ours don't smell

HunieBuniesBack · 13/02/2007 21:01

Oh! Hattie05, not smiling at the death of your guinea pig but at Tamum's docile & cuddly boys.

The man at the pet shop said that we can't have our guinea pigs until May 1st if they are being housed outside as the change in temparture wouldn't be good for them

Any sex will be tollerant if handled enough. We have 3 girls & have had numerous boys & they are the same temperment as they all get handled the same amount.

Just be careful, if you are planning to keep 2 or more boys together (as in the same cage), they do eventually fight as they both want to be the head of the pack. Not a problem we have had with girls.

Tamum · 13/02/2007 21:18

That's only if they haven't grown up together though isn't it, sandcastles? Ours are 18 months and never fight. They're not siblings but have been together since they were wee.

Bugsy2 · 13/02/2007 21:19

I'm so taken with our guinea pigs & my kids adore them. The live in our playroom & are cuddled & loved so much.
We have a boy & a girl. The boy had his little bits removed without any problem at the local vets. They get on really well together.

Tamum · 13/02/2007 21:21

Ours start singing as soon as they hear the fridge being opened or vegetables being chopped. So sweet

wheresthehamster · 13/02/2007 21:22

Our 2 boy pigs nearly killed each other for the love of Flopsy the rabbit.

They had to be separated after one tore the other's ear off. It was crazy as they had all lived together since birth.

Both of the pigs are dead now and we are getting 2 more next week but going for girls this time.

DontlookatmeImshy · 13/02/2007 21:22

Two boys will not always eventually fight, although it's best to get (for eg)two brothers from the same litter and keep the environment female free.

Gp's over 6months can be successfully introduced, (although it can be more difficult with males)

And girls can fight too. Ultimately it dependson the personality/character of the individual gp's.

sandcastles · 13/02/2007 21:37

Tamum, We have had 2 brothers who lived well together for a year & then just started to fight, almost overnight. Whereas we introduced a younger male & he & one of the elder ones lived together for 2 years, until the elder one died.

wheresthehamster, be careful. We brought 2 girls, we now have three. 1 was pg at the pet shop, not uncommon, so I'm told.

wheresthehamster · 13/02/2007 21:47

Never thought of that!

Won't tell the dds that could happen they would be hoping and praying that one was pg!

HunieBuniesBack · 13/02/2007 21:48

Bugsy2, are your GPs girls or boys?

Bugsy2 · 13/02/2007 21:53

boy & girl. Initially had two brothers but one died, so got a girl & had to have the boy neutered. All fine, no problems. They are currently snuggled up together on the roof of their house, peering sleepily at me. I love them nearly as much as my kids do!!!!

HunieBuniesBack · 13/02/2007 22:22

I like the idea of a boy and a girl, but the cost of neuterering is about £50 at my local vet, I think because of the GA.

Roll on May 1st
