Guinea Pigs indoors or outdoors?

My dd (10) is seriously obsessed with animals and has been hassling me for months/years about getting a pet. We have finally settled on guinea pigs - I'm inclined to keep them outside - didn't even realise they could be inside pets - but There seems to be a lot of conflicting advice on which is better for them - inside or out?

We have two Guinea pigs who are kept outside but they are in the greenhouse. They are put outside every day in good weather in a big run on the grass so they can graze.

I didn't want them inside but I also felt it was cruel to keep them outside in winter so this is a happy medium.
