Helping an old cat shed their claws....

Ok, so I've just clipped the ends of MOG's (miserable old git) claws as he now has some very thick ones which he cannot retract anymore. I'm concerned that they need some attention but don't know what else to do?
Some of the sides came away with the tip (I was very careful not to take too much off), but the base of them seems to have black 'stuff' around them - do I need to do anything to clean it away? If so, how?
(In general he's reasonably tempered, but I don't want to lose too much blood!)
Thanks. Smile
