How much does you cat eat in a day?

We have swapped from sachets to tins recently as I am on an economy mission and the cat seemed to be costing more in sachets than we were in milk bread and butter in a week....anyway.
Hes eating a tin over the course of a day with biscuits and water available too.
Hes hungry now.
Ive gave him some custard as i dont want to open a fresh tin, but im wondering if hes a pig, or we are underfeeding him and whether we should by a box of sachets for a last evening meal.
Hes eating all the tin, its not getting thrown out like sachets were.

we give one sachet a day plus as much biscuits as she wants - but seems much less than you.

She does seem hungrier at this time of year - so cold but she is killing at least 4 times a week and I don't want to give her too much food because my motto is if you kill it you eat it (only applies to cat!)

charliecat · 27/01/2007 23:19

oh really...goes to shake the cat upside down to get those extra two meals back out
What does your cat kill and eat? my cat wont go out the door. too cold...and if he does kill he just leaves it in the garden uneaten

Some cats will just eat whatever isthere. This is not supposed to be true, but my ex tried it out on one of our cats once, and he said he had to stop after a while because the cat just went on and on eating! (He did usually have to eat his food fast in case the dog came along and gobbled it all up, so maybe he had bad habits!) If you are talking about standard size tins then I'd reckon on half a tin with dry food too. He may just like the tinned food more than the sachets. In my experience cats are fussy! However I have no idea how much my current cat is eating as we have on last count at least six visiting cats! I suspect though that you shouldn't be giving your cat custard...

DimpledThighs · 27/01/2007 23:32

perhaps she has to kill because I don't feed her enough

If I told her she would much prefer to be your cat!

MummyPenguin · 28/01/2007 10:32

More than my Labrador and Golden Retriever put together. Greedy fecker.

cece · 28/01/2007 10:35

ours has one sachet and a bowl of bisuits a day.

However, she is worse than a dog for begging for food during meal times.

Never kills anything though.

cece · 28/01/2007 10:35

She would happily eat more but gets very fat if we give her more than this.

aDad · 28/01/2007 10:36

one sachet am and one pm plus occasional biscuits if she pesters you enough for them.

Not that much, but then again she does absolultely zilch most of the time in terms expending energy.

My cat has 3/4 pouches per day plus biscuits...

cece · 28/01/2007 10:59

I think that's how many mine had when I left her for 3 weeks in a cattery. I didn't recognise she was so rotund!!! LOL

ItsMeMellowma · 28/01/2007 11:21

Yes My fat is a fatty!!

ItsMeMellowma · 28/01/2007 11:22

cat/fat

aDad · 28/01/2007 11:22

mine's a wannabe fatty

PinkTulips · 28/01/2007 11:40

1/2 to 1 tin of canned fish and about 2/3 handfuls of dry food

pointydog · 28/01/2007 12:11

mellowma!! Can't believe your cats eat all that.

My cat has one pouch and one lot of dried biscuits. She often meows for more. I occasionally give in. Dh thinks she is too fat.

My neighbours' cat (and they are both vets) has half a pouch and a few massive unappetising-looking boulder biscuits. I think they are the lentil-weavers of the cat world. I always feel sorry for their cat if I have to feed it and want to give it the whole pouch but know it's not my place. I feel like saying, 'give yer cat a treat ffs'

pointydog · 28/01/2007 12:12

For a while it got a third of a pouch.

pointydog · 28/01/2007 12:12

a third

pointydog · 28/01/2007 12:12

what's wrong with that?

pointydog · 28/01/2007 12:13

ah!

tissy · 28/01/2007 12:37

our cat gets a small tin a day, split into 3 meals; if she gets more a time she throws it back up. She gets as many biscuits as she likes. She is still fat . I'm thinking of restricting the biscuits as well, but not sure if I could bear the plaintive meows!

She's 14 and does still catch mice (when she can be arsed). But in winter she'd much rather curl up in front of the fire, or on the radiator!

ItsMeMellowma · 28/01/2007 13:30

I think I tend to forget sometimes...and just feed her when she miaows as she is annoying...she also gives me a little gentle bite on the hand if she wants food...

Shes very cute, dh brought her in some sheba last night and I opened it for her and it is still sitting there now...I refuse to give in!! Fussy kitty!!
