ear infection in my lab cross

We have just noticed tonight that our dog has sores/scabs on the underside on the tips of both his ears. Where he has scratched, the skin is red raw and bleeding. He has 'floppy' ears and the infection or whatever it is is external only. I have checked him for ear mites but he seems to be clear.

Am making an appointment at the vets first thing tomorrow but does anyone have any experience of this? Should I bathe his ears or leave it until the vet has a look?

TIA oxo

thanks so much for replying Muminfife. I feel awful that i'd missed it - one of the kids noticed . I'm going to pop into the vets in about an hour (after our walk in the woods!) and see if they can take a look at him straight away. He's also been vomiting quite a lot and has peed twice indoors in the last week (unheard of previously). My husband has been working away a lot recently and I'm sure the dog is v stressed as a result of the change.

thanks again

No Fio, just scabs which have crusted over on the tips of the ears but he keeps scratching them and they are pink and weepy underneath (yuch!)
