can anyone answer some questions about how quickly they grow up?

  • how soon can you be reasonably happy that they won't wander out of the front door whilst you're talking to the post man and get lost? or find some silly corner to squeeze into and get stuck in.
  • how soon is it ok to leave them - either in a cattery or at home with somone coming in to feed them twice a day?
  • how soon do they loose their tiny kitten cuteness? are they pretty big and unkitten like by 18 weeks? 19? 20?
we;re in the process of trying to work out the best timing to get some - any pointers would be really welcome

We kept our kitten in teh house till she was almost six months. The catty woman who gave us the kitten advised that - little more sense about them and we had her spayed then.

They are also pretty big and un-kitten like by then. They certainly need to stay indoors for a month so they recognise home and won't get lost.

We got teh kitten in the summer as I was at home then and could give it attention and company. Don't think it would matter when you got it as long as someone is about a lot of the time.

If kitten is big enough to push a cat flap open without help it's probably old enough to go out alone.

pointydog's advice is probably wise but I must admit our kitten was out from a much younger age. The flip side is that the sooner they can go out, the sooner you can train them to use an outside loo spot.

Yeah I think it does depend how close you are to traffic. My catty advisor was in the country but near a fast country road.

Have you trained your cat to use one particular spot, shimmy?
