Please tell me I won't have to handle my dog's testicles...??

We think he has an infection (he's a springer spaniel). His balls are normally dark in colour -well I think they are, they're not something I pay too much attention to. Unlike he, who has been paying them far too much attention recently.
Anyway, tonight we notice that he has bright red slightly swollen patches on them, so he'll be off to the vets tomorrow.

Am hoping obv, that it's nothing too serious, but wondered if any other MNer had had this problem (or had a dog who had this problem to be more accurate) and if so, what the treatment might be.

I can give a dog tablets, I can bathe a dog's wound - I could probably even administer eye drops. I cannot however touch his balls - I know it's a long shot, but please someone, reassure me that I won't have to..

Sorry.

I just sprayed........
and yes that was sprayed not spayed.

MummyPenguin · 03/01/2007 19:24

Hopefully you won't have to! The vet should do that, and will most likely give him some antibiotics.

HuwEdwards · 03/01/2007 19:24

I daren't google....

I think this sort of affliction is best sorted by hourly gonad massage

HuwEdwards · 03/01/2007 19:41

you're not funny CD....

Am bumping this because there are a few 'dog' threads in active convos and despite the heartfelt and useful advice from LJG and CD , I would still like to know if anyone else's dog has had red testicles the size of Brazil (which is what DP said when he saw my 'slightly swollen' comment in the OP)

I'm afraid I don't know.....you'll just have to brace yourself and find out at the vets.

Apparently some people squeeze their own dogs anal glands - now that I really couldn't do

handlemecarefully · 03/01/2007 20:34

My guess that it will involve some sort of ointment or topical anti biotic though!

HuwEdwards · 03/01/2007 20:38

squeezing anal glands

Any idea about how the ointment could be applied without touching his nads?

If he has been licking them, the skin will be inflamed. Our dog licks his paws and they get sore and inflamed. We have to put fuciderm cream on them and cover them with socks.

Havingatoughtime · 03/01/2007 20:41

how old is dog?

Gingerbear · 03/01/2007 20:42

marigolds and a cotton bud??

Havingatoughtime · 03/01/2007 20:43

dp says it sounds like scrotal eczema (!!!!!!!!!!) for which he would rescribe fuciderm cream (yikes!!!!!!)

HuwEdwards · 03/01/2007 20:53

dear mother of god ginger, what a thought socks on his balls - but yes, he is licking (yeuch emoticon) - a lot.

Well we have 2 DDs and I do most of the fanjo-related stuff with them, so this is definitely one for DP.

HATT - dog is 5, 6 this year.

Sorry, don't know, both of mine have been "altered".

You could wear gloves...

HuwEdwards · 03/01/2007 21:08

3rdTT.

Now that's a thought, maybe I should just get the vet to whip 'em off...

Gingerbear · 03/01/2007 21:13

But his little saggy sack would still be sore

NotQuiteCockney · 03/01/2007 21:15

I thought you always had to do their anal glands? It's gross, yeah, but better than watching them drag their butts all over the floor ...

3rdTriMossTer · 03/01/2007 21:16

HE obviously you'd still have to rub cream into the area for a few weeks until it healed.

[joking emoticon]

MummyPenguin · 03/01/2007 22:58

My DS was prescribed fuciderm cream for impetigo on his arse. LOL HE at 'fanjo related stuff'!!

Gingerbear · 05/01/2007 22:00

Well Huw. have you had the Marigolds out yet?

HuwEdwards · 24/01/2007 20:28

Just saw another thread where Califrau had been pondering the fate of my dogs testicles.

So, the 1st application was a disaster - vet had recommended 'rear entry', that is lifting up the dog's tail and applying the cream with gloved hand.

So, that evening, I held the mutt's head, while DP approached, lifted the dog's tail as instructed by me and no sooner reached the dog's nuts when the usually v.friendly and frankly daft dog, turned and nearly took his hand off.

So, next night, DP went outside and developed his own special testicle-fondling relationship. Despite the vet's advice, DP recommended 'side entry' - lifting the dog's back leg for 'access' and the dog was perfectly happy.

Personally I never saw any further applications, so I reckon the subsequent successful applications had more to do with whispering sweet nothings into the dog's ear...

Dog's testicles are much improved.

Now if I can just get DP out of the dog basket at night and back into bed with me, we'll all be happy.

Guffaw!!

You wuss Huw, fancy letting DH develop a 'special relationship' with the pooch!

I am so pleased that his balls are on the mend.
