he has been fighting, and hs been bitten behind the ear, and it must have been a few days ago, becuse it was swollen to the size of a large grape *(huge for a cat!) and when I clened it, loads of (boak) pus came out. Loads.

So, having squeezed most of the pus out, cleaned it with alcohol gel, and applied some sudocrem, have I done the right thing? Obviously he needs to be seen by a vet, but I mean for tonight?

Bless him he didn't even flinch when I was doing all that, he is such a sweet cat.

You could try bathing it in cool boiled water and salt solution?

DingdongMegaLegsonhigh · 30/12/2006 23:06

He migyt need some antibiotics. Although it sounds like you've done a good job cleaning the wound, the vet told us to clean it with hot water. Our poor cat got bitten on the tail and the abcess was huge, like your cat's, loads of pus.

Cat bites are notoriously nasty and full of bacteria.

Poor puss, hope he's ok.

oh poor thing
I would def follow all advice here, and get him to the vet for antibiotics, as usually the worst thing with this is all the bacteria they get from bites from other cats.
and I would get him neutered too - he might still get bitten but there will be less fights (and smells!)

colditz · 30/12/2006 23:35

Thanks, will (slightly resentfully) take him to the vet as soon as. I wish I could have more sympathy, but for aall his soppiness with us, I have seen him pick a fight and it's not a pretty sight!

sounds like a cat bite abcess, that was what the emergancy vet thought, when I phoned her, was wrong with my cat's leg when actully he had been shot. Because the emergancy vet thought it was an abcess she was happy for me to wait till the morning to take him in the morning to my regular vet.

Twinklemegan · 30/12/2006 23:53

Oh yes, I completely agree he must go to the vet for antibiotics, which I think Colditz was going to do anyway weren't you? My cat got bitten on her leg and we didn't realise it was a bite until it turned nasty and we took her to the vets .

DimpledThighs · 31/12/2006 00:52

can I sy how sory I am that your cat is in pain. Hope it is not too horrid looking after him.

Can I also add that this is the best title for a thread I have ever read ever. I hope it gets bumped loads because the title really made me laugh - but I still sypathise with your cat - you just have a hilarious turn of phrase!

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 31/12/2006 09:42

Chopping his bollocks off won't help though - my neutered male cat still used to fight and needed several courses of Antibiotics for bites.

Not sure you should put cream of any sort on the wound though.

ditto what Dragon said
