Explaining cremation?

Cat died before Christmas and we have the ashes. DD who is 5 was naturally upset as this was her first experience of death. We would like to scatter the ashes but can't decide how to involve her and explain the notion of cremation as it doesn't exactly sound pleasant does it? Anyone else tackled this?

I am a vet so my DD has always been aware of cremation. I explained as once the body was empty 'darling pet' had gone it was burnt ( I think you need to tell the truth) and the ashes it what us left.
I think it is very important that they understand that the body is empty.
