Has anyone got one, or had one and how was they with the children?

I have two, a boy and a girl, they are brilliant. We keep their wings trimmed to stop them flying too high which makes them more tame. They have great little characters and will sit quite happily on my 3 year old.
They don't tend to bite and if they do it's a very small nip not like the type of damage hamster teeth can do.
I think they are brilliant pets, easy to clean, cheap to look after and they don't smell

I had budgies when I was younger, got my first one when I was 5 - a friend of my parents bought it for my birthday. they don't tend to nip too hard and if you can tame them then they're lovely. they are easy to look after - that only thing I'll say is that birds of any sort do tend to flick seed out of the cage so can be quite messy.

Am trying to convince dh to let me have a bird - but he's not budging

My bro and I had a budgie each. They came from an elderly couple who couldn't look after them any longer. My bro's nipped occasionally but mine, of course was impeccabaly behaved. They're great pets, fun, entertaining, cheap and easy to care for. I'd like a pet bird again.
